Dangerous Ones

Milo Yiannopolous likes to describe himself as “dangerous,” but the word may appeal more to his followers than to him. Milo, who has called for violence against journalists, was a speaker at an event in Seattle in January 2017, when two of his supporters entered a crowd of counter-protesters and allegedly shot one in the stomach. Also in Washington, a former Milo intern and Youtube personality stabbed his father to death in an argument where he accused his parents of being leftist pedophiles.

Overview

On the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States of America, right-wing media personality Milo Yiannopoulos was due to speak in Seattle, WA. As many of his events tend to do, this event drew a large counter-protest. Two of his supporters, Marc and Elizabeth Hokoana, arrived at the event with the apparent intention of antagonizing counter-protesters. Both Marc and Elizabeth were armed: Marc with pepper spray, and Elizabeth with a handgun. An altercation broke out and Elizabeth allegedly fired her gun, hitting a man in the stomach, critically wounding him. Marc is accused of released pepper spray in the crowd. Both are facing felony charges for the incident.1

Both accused are claiming self-defense, though Elizabeth appears to have contradicted herself in her recorded statements.2 About an hour before the shooting, it appears that one of the Hokoanas reached out to Milo on social media.3 The Hokoanas will stand trial in March of 2019.

In a separate case in Washington, Lane Davis, a former intern of Milo, and a Youtube personality who went by the username “seattle4truth,” killed his father during a domestic argument. Recordings of the killing show that Davis claimed his parents were leftists and pedophiles. His parents begged him to leave a knife alone before he stabbed his father multiple times.4 Davis pleaded guity to second degree murder and was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Before he died, Davis the elder called his son a “Nazi.” In addition to working for Milo, Davis also wrote for The Ralph Retort, an opinion site that grew out of GamerGate run by Ethan Oliver Ralph.5 After Davis’s arrest, Ralph purged all of Davis’s articles. Ralph himself is no stranger to legal troubles of his own. In 2016, Ralph was arrested for two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer, one count of obstruction of justice without force, and one count of public swearing or intoxication.6 Court records show he pleaded guilty to one felony count of assaulting a law enforcement officer and served eight months in jail.
